What is contact resistance and why should it be measured regularly?

Contact resistance refers to the resistance encountered by current as it passes through the contact surfaces between two conductors. The magnitude of this resistance mainly depends on the smoothness of the contact surface, contact pressure, and material properties. In electrical equipment, particularly in high-voltage switches and circuit breakers, contact resistance has a significant impact on the normal operation of the equipment.

The measurement of contact resistance is carried out to ensure the reliable operation of electrical equipment. Over time, contact points may experience oxidation, corrosion, or wear, which can increase resistance, leading to overheating, reduced conductivity, and even safety risks. By regularly measuring contact resistance, the condition of the contact points can be assessed, preventing overheating damage, improving the equipment’s conductivity and safety, and enabling preventive maintenance. JYL100B/200B has a maximum output current of up to 200A, with a measurement range of 0Ω to 100mΩ.
